SUMMARY:Anti - Racism For White People
DESCRIPTION: \n\nGlenview Community Church invites you to join an interactive Zoom on Jan. 27 at 7:00 p.m.   Rev. Smash of the Lighthouse Foundation will lead the discussion of anti-racism for white folks.\n\nRegister here.\n\nIf you have trouble registering\, please contact Susan Woodsome in the GCC office at (847) 724-2210\, extension 225.\n###\nThe norm of whiteness has been invisible to many of us. Whiteness and white racialized identity refer to the way that white people\, their customs\, culture\, and beliefs operate as the standard to which all other groups are compared. When we say or think something in our society is “normal” we typically mean it’s white. Exploring the ways we’ve been formed by white dominant culture can open us up toward honesty and accountability.\n\nWhite privilege and power are captured through systemic racism. To be anti-racist\, we must first understand how structural racism is constructed by the self-interest of wealthy white elites and then defended through the creation of racist ideas and beliefs. When we can identify the racist policies\, laws\, regulations\, and rules that govern our society\, we can begin to challenge them.\n\nRev. Smash is a UCC ordained pastor\, teacher\, and organizer who led a faith-rooted movement of resistance to white supremacist violence in Charlottesville\, VA. An ardent follower of the subversive way of Jesus\, Smash always seeks to participate in a beloved community. Currently\, she organizes with Lighthouse Foundation\, a Black Queer-led\, multiracial social justice organization that advances justice for Black LGBTQ+ people across Chicagoland through empowerment\, education\, and entertainment. Lighthouse Foundation and Lighthouse Church are located at St. Paul's UCC in Chicago.
